Ernesto Valverde benched Barcelona‘s talisman Lionel Messi against Levante at the weekend, giving the Argentine a rest for 45 minutes before bringing him on to score the winner and lift the La Liga trophy.
The form of the diminutive forward is fearsome this year, with 46 goals in 45 games. Liverpool have the unenviable task of keeping the world’s greatest player quiet while he is in arguably the form of his life in the Champions Leaguesemi-final first leg at Camp Nou.
Valverde has a near full-strength squad to pick from, with only Rafinha unavailable to feature in the European tie.
Here is how Barcelona could line up:

Defence

Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet have been Barcelona’s first-choice centre-backs in big European matches this year, and after assured performances against Manchester United, Valverde will likely see no reason to change the formula. Jordi Alba’s form at left-back this season will likely lead to a start, while Marc André ter Stegen is set to continue between the sticks.
The major question mark is at right-back, where Nelson Semedo’s pace could give him the advantage over Sergi Roberto, especially considering Sadio Mané’s frightening form in front of goal.
Starting players: Ter Stegen; Semedo, Lenglet, Pique, Alba

Midfield

Ivan Rakitic will take the field due to his growing influence in the Barcelona midfield, while Sergio Busquets will likely start in his usual withdrawn role with his usual brief to destroy and create.
The question is mostly going to be over whether Arthur or Arturo Vidal joins them in the middle – and on current form and technical ability it seems like Arthur may get the nod.
Starting players: Busquets, Rakitic, Arthur

As Valverde noted in the build-up, he has given Messi plenty of time to recuperate ahead of this game: “Messi has been rested but we’ve had three league games within seven days, we’ve had the games with Manchester United and it’s been a very heavy workload.”
Philippe Coutinho’s good form will likely lead to a start ahead of Ousmane Dembele, and there is only one man to lead the line – the irrepressible Luis Suarez.
Starting players: Messi, Suarez, Coutinho
